The Place

Historical introduction – Founded in 1302 by Cesenati (inhabitants of Cesena) as Cesena’s port (from which it gets its name)it was subjected to devastations by Uguccione della Faggiuola, Federico da Montefeltro and Bernardino da Polenta; in 1328 was rebuilt by Cecco Ordelaffi and Ostasio da Polenta. In 1377 the Pope sold it to Guido da Polenta who gave it back in 1382. Between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16thcentury, the port was rebuilt according to the design of Leonardo da Vinci who arranged a basin in the north and a closed canal in the south (named Vena Mazzarini), to regulate the tide. Then this town was part of Cesena’s government. In 1849 Giuseppe Garibaldi sailed from Cesenatico bound for Venice with his wife Anita and his friends survived the retreat of Rome.
